Mathew Hellawell

Owner

Mat was born and raised in southern Alberta. As a boy, Mat had a natural affinity for tinkering and would take a part his bikes and toys, clean them, and put them back together. He credits his love and skills for tinkering to his late grandfather on his mother’s side, Joe Kusalik – a lovely man who enjoyed sharing his many skills with his grandchildren. Mat has two degrees, both from the University of Lethbridge (a Bachelor’s of Music and a Bachelor’s of Management). He has also worked as a music teacher for over a decade. Mat is CEBA (Canadian Electric Bicycle Association) certified, which allows him to repair the electrical components of an E-bike. Mat opened BikeLane in Lethbridge in 2023, but has been operating a mobile E-bike and bicycle repair service since 2021. Mat is Scout’s dad and he loves taking her for bike rides. Mat also loves camping in the Porcupine Hills in his 1999 4Runner and roof top tent.

Kaitlynn Weaver

Owner and Communications Manager

Kaitlynn is Mat’s partner in both business and in life. Born and raised in central Alberta, Kaitlynn came to Lethbridge for post-secondary in 2012. Since then, she has completed a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Arts at the U of L. Her original plans were to move away from Lethbridge right after school, but (fortunately) she found Mat. The rest is history. Kaitlynn manages BikeLane’s social media and communications. Along with BikeLane, Kaitlynn currently works full-time as a supervisor at a non-profit in rural southern Alberta.

Scott Zeck

Assistant Manager

Once a west coast boy, Scott has been a resident of the prairies for more than a decade. For as long as he can remember, Scott has always had a passion for everything to do with cycling. He loves riding, building, and repairing bicycles. Scott also has an eclectic side that draws him to antique bikes and typewriters. Be sure to ask him what project he’s working on.

Ward Eggli

Bike Tech & Sales Associate

Ward Eggli is a retired employee of the City of Lethbridge and has worked for 35 years in Emergency Services as a Paramedic, Firefighter, Senior Officer, and Accreditation Lead. Ward has a degree in Health Sciences and has always been interested in public service. Ward’s accreditation work has allowed him to travel to almost every province in Canada and even overseas. Ward was born in Grande Prairie and traveled across Alberta over his lifetime, landing in Southern Alberta. He has always been interested in cycling. When he was young, Ward spent time on his Grandparent’s farm. Ward’s late grandfather was very handy with almost everything and Ward quickly picked up his grandfather’s passion for fixing, building, and cleaning things. Ward’s first big kid bike was from the town dump where him and his Grandpa found a frame and some wheels that didn’t match. They made it work.

Scout

Emotional Support Animal & BikeLane Mascot

Rescued from the Lethbridge Animal Shelter in September of 2019, Scout is an integral part of BikeLane. As the designated co-pilot, mascot, and friend, Scout is guaranteed to bring some sunshine to your day. Cuddles are complimentary with every bike service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer services outside of Lethbridge?

Yes, however, we do charge a commuting fee depending on how far you live out of the city. Want to make it cheaper? Get a few of your friends to book at the same time and share the fee.

Do you service electric bikes?

Definitely! BikeLane is e-bike certified through the Canadian Electric Bike Association. Staff can diagnose most electrical or mechanical issues on your e-bike, and we are able to repair your E-bike’s motor.

Do you install E-bike Conversion Kits?

What types of bikes do you service?

BikeLane is fully equipped with all the tools and technical expertise to service every kind of bike including: Road, Tri, Mountain, Hybrid/Commuter, Tandem, Recumbent bikes, Trikes, Kids bikes etc. BikeLane is also the only shop in Lethbridge that is certified to fix the electrical components of an E-bike.

Where do you service my bike?

All the service is performed on site at your home or in-shop. Just schedule your service accordingly.

What if I book a mobile tune-up and something else is wrong with my bike that requires more time?

If you’re ever worried about what your bike may need before your scheduled appointment, just call us. We will ask you a few questions and figure out the service that will best fit your needs. If something additional is needed on your bike after your appointment, you can book more time with me another day.

Do you test my bike after the service?

Yes. We test out all of the upgrades or repairs we do to ensure quality.

My bike needs a full restore, can you offer that?

Yes. The best time to schedule a full restore is during the off season (fall/winter). We will pick up your bike (free of charge) and fix it up in the shop.

In the winter of 2024, BikeLane partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lethbridge and District for the ‘Get a Tune-up. Give a Tune-up’ campaign. $10 from every tune-up went towards repairing a child’s bike at BBBS.

Each summer, BikeLane supports the Mountain Bike Camp through the Be Fit for Life program at the Lethbridge Polytechnic. BikeLane staff do free bike inspections before the camp begins to ensure the kids’ bikes are in tip top shape.
